Building Virtual Worlds

Game Design

[Overview]

BVW gives small teams of students two weeks to create a virtual world, with new groups and goals for each round. We were encourged to try out different devices such as quest, 3d rudder and motion chair. It all culminates in a public festival to hundreds of spectators – and an incredible sense of accomplishment. This page shows three of the games: Mamma Mia! and Horror Ride.

[01] Word 1: Mamma Mia!

Background
Prompt: The Guest Helps a Character Who is Afraid

Create a highly interactive VR world for the Quest 2: a world in which the guest or guests (remember, we have “guests,” not “users”) must help another character achieve a goal. The character is frightened or intimidated by some challenge, some situation, some thing, or some other character that stands in the way of achieving that goal.

My roles and responsibilities

As an artist, I collaborated closely with designers and programmers to brainstorm the theme and concept of the game.

  • Created mood board for the game art style.

  • Created the water shader, the skybox and the pizza island

  • Designed simple UI elements for the title and the the dialogue bubble.

The Game
Mamma Mia!

This one-player interaction using Quest 2 , asking the much-debated question, should pineapple be on pizza? The locals on the Italian Pizza Island afraids of the pineapple pirate. Guest plays as a pepperoni defender who protected his Italian Pizza Island from the invading pineapple pirate. Enjoy!

[01] Word 2: Horror Rides

Background
Prompt: Game for the festival

Create a consistent, highly interactive, and engaging experience that lets naïve guests feel like they have a lot of freedom in the choices they make. Despite this feeling of freedom, you must also ensure they have a very enjoyable time in the brief experience you provide for them. You may find that indirect control (discussed in class) is a very useful way to make your world seem larger and richer than it really is. It is not necessary that the experience continues to be engaging after multiple playthroughs. (But if it is, all the better!)

My roles and responsibilities
  • Created and animated key in-game assets, including the mandrake grass, pot, and carrot.

The Game
Once A Pot in Time

T-Rex goes on a date with a cooking pot and makes a chicken soup by tossing ingredients into the boiling pot

[03] Word 4: Horror Rides

Background
Prompt: Game for the festival

Create a highly interactive world using any device, it can be a party game, a social experience, and emmisive experience. Think in terms of the emotions, the player numbers, the time frame and etc.

My roles and responsibilities

During this round, we have a relatively large scene. I collaborated with the other artist on the team where I mainly focus on modeling props and animate the character:

  • Modeled the elevator, wheelchair and other small props

  • Animated the wheelchair and the monster

The Game
Horror Ride

This one-player emmersive experience using Motion Chair, inviting the players to join an advanture to explore the scret of the wield house.: ‘When I wake up, I am tied on a wheelchair. Why I am in this house? What are the horrible noises from the basement? What is happening in the lost building?’

[04] Festival

Background
2023 ETC Festival

On December 8, 2023 starting at 6pm, the ETC held it’s annual Fall Festival. This end of the semester event showcases selected work from the first year students as well as the project from the second year students.

My roles and responsibilities

Two of my games were selected, and my role involved designing the interior layout of our rooms, as well as hosting guests and introducing them to our games.
